Ooo, a whole issue on Italy...

My favorite of all are the pieces on cheese, including Counting Sheep and The Last Touch, and the directions on making ricotta at home (is anyone who knows me surprised by this?); Ruth Reichl's letter is a really great story; the Good Living section is great (did it used to be this good?); since I love pasta makers it was nice to see them compared; the story on Conflict Cuisine is really interesting; and all the features are interesting and beautiful (basically, it's easy to keep me happy by talking about Italy)

At first the little half-page pull-out about Spring produce was in my "Like" column, but when I realized that it was essentially an add for the website (tempting ideas, but you have to go to the website for any depth), I changed my mind. It feels like they wanted to fit something about Spring on and point people toward the web, so they mashed the two needs together.
Yum
Ham, Leek, and Three-Cheese Quiche; Duck Tortilla Soup; Southwestern Corn and Potato Soup; Italian Chicken Salad; Lemon Olive-Oil Cake; Parmigiano-Reggiano with Fresh Fennel; Farmhouse Sunday Soup; Mother's Broth; Neapolitan Potato Pie; Easter Wheat-Berry Cake; Wine Cake with Macerated Strawberries; Tortellini In Parmesan Broth; Parmesan Onion Puffs; and others that have to be omitted if I want to get to bed tonight

They get points for the Passover section (they always do the best with the Jewish holidays - and this one is pretty); in "Starters" the piece on Yuzu is great and the day in Bangkok; Party Improv actually looks actually easy, and the idea of wheatgrass centerpieces is great (and cheap!); an excerpt from Julia Child's memoir - amazing, and they're lucky to have it; the metal bird's nest in Bon Vivant is beautiful, and not even too outside my budget for gifts; nice article on Riesling; pretty picture of Spring veggies; and yay for Spring chickens - I'm so bored of my regular recipes

I don't like the faux-lodge look, and these pieces were so decidedly "faux" that it just don't get it
Yum
Artichoke recipes (but let's see if they're actually better than what I usually do); deviled egg variations look great; Chilled Watercress Soup with Green Onion Cream looks like Spring in a bowl; Seared Wild Salmon with New Potatoes and Dijon Broth looks good enough for me to want one of my less favorite fishes; Spring Vegetables Fricassee with Saffron Cream can't possibly taste as good as it looks, but I certainly want to find out; Strawberry Tiramisù looks heavenly; Herbed Fish Cakes with Green Horseradish Sauce will definitely have to be tried in place of the normal gefilte fish from a jar, and Dark Chocolate Tort with Spiked Blackberry Coulis should end my Seder (hint, hint to my hostess); Lemon Lout Tart with Rhubarb is beautiful; and I think the Carmelized Chocolate, Banana, and Marshmallow Sandwiches might just be the key to everlasting happiness.
Saveur
Yes, yes, I'm biased on this issue...

Another good letter from the editor - Jim's story about having "fancy" dinners with his father is perfect; Pacific Paella makes me want to sail away and never come back; I want to eat the prickly pear; "Memories" is a great story; the alfajores cookies look amazing; the Tratoria piece makes me long for Italy; the hummus article is fascinating; and I have to get to Le Veau D'Or as soon as possible.

For some reason the Smørrebrød just don't look that yum to me.
Yum
Pizza Rustica (is it possible to make it in under 8 hrs?); Piselli Freschi (Fresh Peas with Prosciutto); Pappa al Pomodoro (Bread and Tomato Soup); Masbaha (Hummus with Whole Chickpeas) looks amazing; and the Poussins en Cocotte "Bonne Femme" look amazing. Is it awful that I'm not even vaguely interested in either of the tripe recipes?

Asparagus and leeks are basic but they're timely and they look good; Kitchen Tip is actually a good idea, and I even like the wine basics, which has some nice lesser-known stuff

The "five essential pots and pans" once again caters to the lowest common denominator
Yum
Leek and Brie Bruschetta; creamed leeks; mashed potatoes with goat cheese; sesame carrot salad; chai pudding is a nice twists to a childhood favorite; and the pot stickers look good too.
