Dishtowel Apron

20060201_apron.jpg
A while back Martha Stewart Living had a little piece where they made an apron out of a dishtowel (it may have been in "Good Things" and it's possible it was quite a few months ago, if not a couple years). I was totally uninspired by the idea, but when I saw this adorable dishtowel I remembered the idea instantly. It was much too cute to use as a dishtowel, so I decided to add ribbon to it. It'll be a perfect cheerful thing to cook in, and if I'm strategic about it I bet I can use it as lingerie too!

Hi Georgia!

Did you know that in the early 1900s, flour and feed grains used to come is cotton sacks with colorful patterns printed on them so that thrifty housewives could transform the sacks into something new after the flour was used up?

You can read a brief history here:
http://www.baglady1.com/history.htm

And here is a little article that includes a photo of old feedsack dresses:
http://www.research.lsu.edu/newsletter/archives/2005spring/commodity.htm

Some sacks were printed with simple stripes for dishtowels in their second life, and others were printed with pillow cases in mind. Aprons were another common thing made, and I've heard that a sewing pattern for an apron was even occasionally pre-printed right onto the sack!

You can see hundreds of photos of vintage sacks (and occassionally a vintage apron) on ebay using the search words: "flour sack", "feed sack", and "feedsack".

Thanks Jaay, it is the one I made. And I'm not surprised you have something similar - it's perfect for your blog's color scheme!
