Oven Thermometer

Find that the things you bake in the oven aren't turning out the way they're supposed to? Think you've just lost your touch? Well, if your oven isn't so new and shiny, chances are your baking failures are due to your oven not being the right temperature (if you rent in NYC like I do, your oven probably wasn't the greatest when it was installed). To fix the problem and start turning out nice golden-brown cakes again, buy an oven thermometer. You can get one for around $5 from a kitchen supply catalog or just grab one at the supermarket. Just sit it or hang it on one of the racks, check it when your oven has had enough time to pre-heat to the right temperature, and you'll be able to accurately read your oven again.

(If your fridge is letting things go bad sooner than you'd expect, you can also check out fridge thermometers while you're at it.)
